What is a Hate Incident?

A hate incident is any incident which the victim, or anyone else, thinks is based on someone’s prejudice towards them because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability and/or transgender identity. Some examples of hate incidents include harassment (either from a stranger or someone you know), intimidation, or racist, homophobic or transphobic graffiti. We are here to support with any and all incidents of hate, even ones that you might think aren’t that serious.

If you’re not sure if something is a hate incident but still want to talk about it, please get in touch with us.

What happens when I report?

When you make a report with us, you will own that report and what happens to it. If you would like your report to go to the authorities, we will ensure that happens. We can also signpost to any support services alongside this and will work with you to find something that is right for you.

How we can help:

We want to ensure that our communities across Brighton and Hove feel safe. We know however that hate incidents take place across our city. Often people may not report to the authorities because they may feel that they won't be listened to or taken seriously. Our services have been created to counter this; we offer a safe, supportive space to ensure that you always feel heard. By sharing your story with us, we can help you to report it in a way that feels safe and comfortable to you.

Why report?

Hate incidents and crimes can create fear and a sense of isolation. Reporting can help by sharing the weight of your experience - so you know that you are not alone. Reporting can also help to accurately show the extent of hate incidents and crimes across Brighton and Hove. By understanding this, our local authorities can better understand how to respond to them and help to prevent future hate crimes from happening.
